Join us for a 4 week student term
We are learning about what it takes to sustain our most basic needs as humans off grid - and how to do it together! From food sovereignty and garden creation, chopping and stacking firewood, cooking on a fire oven for a large group of people, nurturing orchards, harvesting and processing the yield and to learning creative ways of generating income at local markets.
The key thing people take away with them from this student course is the strength they do have innately to be resilient when working intimately with their environment and the capability they have to provide for their most basic needs - together.
Staying at Wilderland
What will you be doing?
Based on your skills and interests and the season that you come in, you will be helping in sectors as follows
In Landcare you may be doing things like implementing & caring for gardens, learning to sow and raise seedlings and tune in with your environment, managing the syntropics, and dealing with larger flora like tree pruning and harvesting.
For Products & Housekeeping you will be harvesting and making teas, creating balms and ointments, running the market stall or opening the shop, pouring honey, and processing our harvest into vinegars, jams, and other preserves.
With Buildings and Maintenance you may be learning about off grid systems including water and solar systems, milling timber, carpentry, maintenance on buildngs etc..
Though we do have a devoted and knowledgeable team here, there are some sectors that are left without team leaders
We are currently looking for a team leader for balm and ointments, this is something the current people are not familiar with so if the project is active when you apply it will a true learning process - which is the point of Wilderland after all!
We are in need of a beekeeper and hope one arrives soon! There may be opportunities to work with our bees with a local beekeeper however this is not something we are actively offering currently.
What could a day like?
- check-in
with team leader or the community over breakfast
- Working in a team or self guided
-
1pm communal lunch
- Self-directed afternoon
activities
It is encouraged to get stuck in the community. Hosting afternoon yoga sessions is always enjoyable, making a dinner for the community, sharing your skill as a 'workshop' for people to learn, are all great ways of keeping the community engaged and learning together.
Expectations:
- 1 months stay
- 20 hours engagement per week
- Participating in community meetings
- Understanding that you will be the 'guide' of your learning
- Taking care of your home.
House Rules:
- No single-use plastic
- Biodegradable skin/hair/tooth care products only
- No drugs or alcohol
How to Apply
We have a online application that helps us navigate who we are receiving and their interests. You can apply by clicking the button below and we will be in touch soon!

Commitments
Commitment to Wilderland
In the late summer just been Wilderland went through a total reboot and handover to a relatively small and new resident group. This year has been an amazing learning journey and we are grateful to all those who participated in it. We have been discovering what community am and where the holes are. We ask that you understand Wilderland at this time is not perfect, but truly is a learning experiment, we are not catering a service and the fee you pay goes directly to supporting the longevity of Wilderland. If tension arises you try your best to address it, whether mechanical, personal, or social. If you see a job or role that needs doing it may be that it is an opportunity for you.
Commitment to learning alternative living
Things may not be as glamorous as you'd expect, often it means being dirty, cold, wet or frustrated. Pushing through those difficulties is what leads to real change and an awesome internal strength and knowing.
Commitment to yourself
Be present with your feelings, this is a unique opportunity to connect with authenticity. Be true to yourself and respect your inner wisdom.
Commitment to understanding and compassion
Everybody here is on their own journey, Wilderland has always been a social experiment, the dynamic changes with each new person who steps in or out. This is an opportunity to reflect inward before projecting outward and connect with compassion.
Commitment to open dialogue
We aim to have regular dialogue sessions influenced by Krishnamurti and David Bohm which can be quite philosophical, this is a part of the culture here and brings us closer through understanding one another world view.
We aim to have regular community and resident group meetings and we ask that you are open to being fearless and supported in conversations that may be tricky to engage with when necessary, it is part of human nature to be in conflict sometimes, but the resolve is where epic learning is cultivated. If serious issues are to arise we have mediation facilitators available.
